Getting Started at Apobangpo.Space

The notes below will help you to figure out the basics and start posting on the Apobangpo Mastodon Server.

Welcome to the Apobangpo.Space Mastodon Server!

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably just signed up, and we’re so glad you’ve decided to join us.

To help you get started we’ve created a checklist and resources below.

Please also feel free to get in touch with PixelCats on the server if you need support or have specific questions!

2. Complete Your Profile

Adding a profile picture, a bio, and a header image helps people understand who you are and if they want to follow you. Find out more on the Mastodon.org website.

3. Understand the Timeline

Mastodon isn’t one site but many connected servers (instances). You’ll see three timelines:

  • Home Timeline – where you’ll find the people you follow.
  • In Live Feeds you’ll find This Server which includes everyone on Apobangpo.Space who is posting publicly
  • You’ll also find All which is the federated timeline that includes posts from other connected servers.

4. Follow People and Hashtags

We don’t have algorithmic feeds building the timeline on Mastodon. Rather, you need to follow people and hashtags to fill your timeline with interesting content and people to interact with.

5. Write an Intro Post with a little bit of information about you

For example, where you are in the world, your favourite groups/artists and biases. This helps potential followers get to know you.

Tag your Intro Post with the tag #PurpleIntroPost and #IntroPost so we can find it.

7. Choose a Mastodon Client

While you can use Mastodon through your web browser, many users find that dedicated apps often provide a better experience, as they provide additional features like multiple account support, better notifications, and better interfaces.

Check out our How to choose a Mastodon App Guide for more info.

8. Use Hashtags

Add relevant hashtags to your posts so people can find content they’re interested in. Search is limited, so Hashtags are essential for conversation and discovery. Find out more about #Hashtags via Fedi.Tips.

9. Join the Hashtag Games

10. Add Alt Text

The Mastodon community cares about accessibility. Add image descriptions (alt text) to your images so screen reader users can enjoy your posts. Find out more on Fedi.Tips.

11. Use Content Warnings (CWs)

Mastodon culture emphasizes content warnings for sensitive topics, spoilers, politics, or even just long posts. Click the “CW” button when composing to add a warning that hides your post behind a click-through. Find out more on the Mastodon.org website.
